The Transparent Birdhouse

Layered Laser-cut Acrylic Sculpture • 2018

Advised by Professor Mark Parsons

The main function of the architectural typology we understand as the birdhouse differs from traditional constructed space. While birds, the intended inhabitants, do utilize the shelters, birdhouses are built by humans for the purpose of decorating and adorning their own personal environments, or rather the site of these birdhouses. In the interest of revealing the shadowed agenda of these constructions, The Transparent Birdhouse is designed without the dual function of a literal bird shelter, but purely for human aesthetic enjoyment. It is transparent in not only material but intended function as well. In contemplating the living conditions of the stereotypical urban millennial, the siting of an interior apartment shelf was chosen in an attempt to amplify the birdhouse typology as a decorative object.
