Sculptural Box • 2012

Advised by Professor Laura Hill

Home utilizes materiality and iconography to blend two classic forms into a third functional object. While the project exists as a storage box, it takes the shape of a book and utilizes various materials and construction techniques to emulate a house. Through hardware, the cover of the book, or the top of the box, becomes a front door. An exterior wall of grouted stone becomes a fortress that shelters, while ribbed glass fuses book pages with house windows. A tiled floor transforms the box interior into a seemingly habitable space. This project specifically addresses the form and materiality of a house and a book as both are places to find comfort, safety, and sanctuary. This heightens the box from a simple protective storage device to a Home.
