Golden Grief
Sculptural Ceramic Vessel • 2013
Advised by Professor Eric Rempe
Golden Grief is a sculptural ceramic plant pot in the form of a battered face. This project addresses domestic abuse and violence against women through the bruises and abrasions displayed on the figure.
This work also finds inspiration from wabi-sabi and kintsugi. Wabi-sabi is an ancient Japanese philosophy that simplifies into three main points: nothing is perfect, nothing is permanent, and nothing is complete. It is within the acceptance and embracing of these truths that we find beauty, strength, and wisdom. Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese practice that embodies these principles. By repairing fragmented and cracked pottery with gold, the imperfections and impermanence of material goods are not only highlighted but made beautiful.
Just as kintsugi uses broken pieces to make something precious, Golden Grief uses gold to not only emphasize the abuse of the anonymous figure, but display the strength, power, and renewal that can be drawn from pain.
