Crystal Cap

Crystal Cap is a play on headwear through the re-creation of a traditional form in an untraditional material. By building a baseball hat from fanned clear acrylic, the conventional purpose of a brimmed cap is rendered useless. As the headwear is no longer a shading device, the sole function of the piece becomes body adornment.

Crystal Cap was designed and built as a gift for a pre-teen whose love of baseball hats extends to the point of wearing them at all times of the day, including while indoors and at night. This project elevates the customary cloth cap into a designed art accessory to showcase the hat as something that exists culturally beyond functionality.
